Mr. Trump was furious that Mr. Powell had ignored his repeated calls for a swift rate cut that would have made it easier for Americans to borrow to buy homes, boosted consumer confidence and lifted the stock market. The Fed cut interest rates three times in a row last year after inflation was already near target. But it paused the strategy amid growing economic uncertainty that has been exacerbated by Mr. Trump's capricious leadership style less than three months into office. On Thursday morning, Mr. Trump appeared exasperated by Mr. Powell's warning the day before that some of the costs of tariffs, which could lead to inflation and higher unemployment, "will be borne by the public".
