Trump previously pardoned Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, ending his nearly 12-year prison sentence. In 2013, the FBI seized 144,000 bitcoins held by Ulbricht, and the U.S. Marshals Service auctioned them at $334 each in 2014 for a total of about $48 million. At current prices, the bitcoins are worth about $14 billion. Venture capitalist Tim Draper bought about 30,000 bitcoins in the auction. Despite the amnesty, Ulbricht has been unable to recover the assets under the Supreme Court's 1993 legal precedent.
